Graduate research opportunities (MSc and PhD)

Students interested in conducting research on reinforced-concrete, bridge engineering, seismic engineering, advanced materials, and structural simulation using the finite-element method are invited to send their CV, academic transcripts, list of references, and letter of intent, highlighting relevant experience, in a single PDF file to cruznogu@ualberta.ca.  While all applications are considered, only the candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

The following projects are examples of projects currently ongoing for MSc and PhD students:

  • Large-scale shear wall modeling and testing using unconventional materials (PhD). Extensive experience with testing of RC elements preferred; experience in the use of finite-element analysis software (OpenSEES, VecTor2, Ansys, ABAQUS, LS-Dyna).
  • Analysis and design of deep RC members with steel-fibre reinforcement.
  • Modelling of RC elements with high-strength concrete and high-strength steel reinforcement.
  • Large-scale shear wall experimental studies: use of high-performance fibre-reinforced cementitious composites (MSc). Previous experience with testing of RC elements preferred; experience in the use of finite-element analysis software (OpenSEES, VecTor2, Ansys, ABAQUS, LS-Dyna).
  • Characterization of Engineered-Cementitious Composites (ECC) and implementation in finite-element software (OpenSEES).
  • Multilayered shell/plate elements for analysis of RC membranes (PhD). Experience with finite-element analysis and formulation for new materials and elements using the OpenSEES framework or similar (OpenSEES, Matlab).

If you have any question about the type of project you would like to participate in, or about funding availability, please feel free to contact me at cruznogu@ualberta.ca.
